there isn t anything new or shocking in the book just how to take out a high calorie ingredient and add a low one in such as make cauliflower bread for grilled cheese or replace chicken wings with cauliflower for wing night and make a tuna sandwich with just using a can of light tuna with an avocado use whole grain bread under 50 calorieshide from pork find turkey turkey bacon is your friend I guess I was looking for something to really just make me pay attention the potato soup is good but I used it as a base and put bacon in it and I added potatoes to make a hearty stew vs soup..the author has a point it s just the common point you are being hammered with right now

lolwut Some of the before calorie counts are not realistic It seems like she s taken the most caloric version she can find for the comparison in order to make her versions look great Others she s only cutting 20 40 calories, which I don t really see the point of I m also a bit skeptical of her portion sizes She ll show a huge piece of pie in her before shot and then a tiny cup for her improved shot Of course that s going to be less calories Some of these also just sound look completely unappealing Black beans in a brownie Hard pass, thanks Or she ll substitute completely different flavors, so that yes it may be less calories, but it s no longer the same dish any Overall, this was a mess.

Originally published on my blog, In the Stacks I received a NetGalley copy in exchange for an honest review. What if you could eat all the food you love burgers, pasta, desserts without the bloating and negative effects In From Junk Food to Joy Food, Joy Bauer shows us how, with a few tweaks, we can turn our favourite comfort foods into healthy meals.I m always looking for healthier foods to make and eat, so when I read about this cookbook, I was so excited Who doesn t want their favourite food to be healthier This book is full of a wide range of recipes, so there s sure to be something in it for everyone It varies from starters and main courses to desserts and drinks All the way through, we re met with helpful tips as well Now, let s see which recipes I made I was still having issues with my phone during the time when I made these recipes, so you ll once again have to endure my not so pretty Snapchat pictures pictures should be back to normal for the next post There were so many recipes that I wanted to try, and I had a really hard time narrowing it down to threeso I did four The first things I made were Chocolate Crunch Bars p.196 These are basically chocolate covered Rice Krispies and oh my god I loved these I like my chocolate to have a little texture and crunch to it, and this is the perfect treat for someone like me Plus, they re incredibly easy to make Next up was a good ole classic General Joy s Chicken p.144 , which is a variation of the well known General Tso s Chicken This was a really tasty meal and it went quickly in my house I had a hard time thickening the sauce so it was a bit runny, but throw it over some rice and problem solved. After that, I ventured into hot territory I made Jalapeno Poppers p.36 These are well loved at my house on special occasions let s be real, if we were allowed to have these on any other occasions, they d be well loved then, too so when I saw these in the cookbook, I knew I needed to try them They were delicious and disappeared very quickly. For my final recipe, I tried the Frozen Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups p.202 These were an interesting and heavenly alternative to regular peanut butter cups Banana fans will surely agree with me on this one All in all, this cookbook is chock full of recipes of the foods you already love, tweaked so that they re healthier There s a wide range of foods that are sure to appeal to even the pickiest of eaters You can t go wrong with this one

From Junk Food to Joy Food All the Foods You Love to EatOnly Better by Bauer, Joy.From Junk Food to Joy Food caught my attention because I am always on the lookout for meals that are good for me but yet don t taste that way This book shows you how to do the exchanges, yet not feel deprived The author, Joy Bauer, shows where there are hidden calories in the food that you choose It also gives choices of foods that allow you to feel energized and healthy. There are recipes from Chicken Parmesan to Key Lime Pie.This book is very useful if you need to eat healthier but don t want to give up on comfort food Each recipe gives the calories for the food we are used to eating and then the lower calorie equivalent.I may have to get the hard copy of this book so I don t make my Kindle too messy while preparing the meals.I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

From Junk Food to Joy food allows you to plan meals where your favourite choices become healthier choices It points out how many hidden calories you are consuming when you pick up a takeaway Her recipes promise to leave you lighter, energised and healthy She states that you can imagine a lunch that you love actually loving you back and she will become your new lunch lady Simple tips like using low fat mayo are easy to incorporate.Amongst the tempting recipes are Sweet Potato Fries, Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Cacciatore and Cheesy Meat Lasagne There is also a section for Decadent Desserts which features a No Bake Key Lime Pie that I am going to have to try.It s a useful book to make you think about the calories that are in some of your favourite comfort foods and how you can make them healthier rather than give them up It gives you the calorie count of the original junk food and the low calorie equivalent count.I m really glad I got the chance to look through this book and would love to get a hard back copy for the kitchen bookshelf. With many thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to enjoy this book I am looking forward to trying the recipes.

This is a pretty standard diet cookbook of the sort that I remember from when I was growing up in the 1970 s and 80 s In it, you ll find diet versions of standard American foods The recipes are not paleo, gluten free, plant based, all natural, or any other modern diet that s embraced for health reasons These are just low calorie versions of junky American classics. If you want to cook diet versions of foods like pancakes, eggs benedict, chicken wings and ho hos, this will probably fit the bill though you re definitely not going to be fooled by the recipes Bauer does things like have you swap out your bagel with a bagel flat or carve out the bread part, and then top it with reduced fat cream cheese and a few strawberries instead of full fat cream cheese and jelly do people really put jelly on cream cheese bagels Chicken wings her way no longer involve the half butter, half hot sauce treatment and are just chicken tenders slathered in hot sauce or a cauliflower version Pancakes are made with ground oats and egg whites Portions are much smaller, fats are greatly reduced, and lots of low calorie products are switched out for regular ones. Some of the recipes sound promising, like the blue cheese dip that s made with low fat Greek yogurt and blue cheese, or the chia jam that s made with real fruit and chia seeds Others sound awful to me, like deviled eggs that are rebranded as angel eggs and filled with hummus the yolks are discarded in her recipe The tan color of hummus filled eggs is just wrong to me Perhaps adding a pinch of turmeric and getting it back to a shade of yellow would help, but they re a little off putting as shown.I cook meals that are mostly organic, gluten free, all natural and vegetarian We live very frugally so this means I generally cook from scratch, including making my own pizza crust, bread, jellies, etc and cook a lot from our own garden or wild foods As such, there s virtually nothing of use to me in this cookbook It involves purchasing low fat and low calorie processed foods and then making dishes that are heavy on wheat, low fat dairy and meat For someone used to eating traditional diner types of foods who s just looking to lose some weight, it may fit the bill I received a digital version of this book for the purpose of this review.
