Even Though They Are Immersed In Sex Saturated Society, Millions Of Teens Are Pledging To Remain Virgins Until Their Wedding Night How Are Evangelical Christians Persuading Young People To Wait Until Marriage Christine J Gardner Looks Closely At The Language Of The Chastity Movement And Discovers A Savvy Campaign That Uses Sex To Sell Abstinence Drawing From Interviews With Evangelical Leaders And Teenagers, She Examines The Strategy To Shift From A Negative Just Say No Approach To A Positive One Just Say Yes To Great Sex Within Marriage Making Chastity Sexy Sheds New Light On An Abstinence Campaign That Has Successfully Recast A Traditionally Feminist Idea My Body, My Choice Into A Powerful Message, But One That Gardner Suggests May Ultimately Reduce Evangelicalism S Transformative Power Focusing On The United States, Her Study Also Includes A Comparative Dimension By Examining The Export Of This Evangelical Agenda To Sub Saharan Africa I was born in the 80s and then subjected to the purity culture revival of the 90s Pam Stenzel told me how sex had a price tag and purity rings and balls were becoming trendy Perhaps it was my contrarian nature but I never took to this ideology and I ve been a lifelong critic This book analyzes how chastity and purity culture was marketed to teenagers as a counter culture and way to attract mates despite the fact that purity culture is a pervasive part of a patriarchal tradition. I picked up this book for several reasons I heard about it in Joshua Harris I Survived documentary I wanted to understand the motivations of the harmful to me teachings about sex and marriage and virginity that I had grown up with.I had a lot of questions Why did we talk so much about sex when we were 13 and none of us even had prospects of having sex Why is the church so obsessed with marriage What do you do if you don t get married Do they actually think these things will work In reading Gardner s book, I realized that in classic evangelical style, there is a lot of Christian gymnastics to get the desired moral outcome If you re a teen in America, we ll sell you literally a ring If you re a teen in Africa, we ll give you a condom and not tell our very conservative sponsors If you re over the age of 30 and unmarried Well, we don t really have answers for you I appreciated the integration of personal interview and research The stories of girls who had developed guilt because of the bad rose and burnt cross analogies made me cry like actual tears The stories of couples who had gotten married only to realize that their promise of great sex was not fulfilled, that marriage wasn t all about sex gasp and that weddings werethan a ceremony for losing your virginity, were eye opening and saddening I guess overall it made meunderstanding My coming of age years were in the late 2000 s, but my mentors and teachers were all products of the 90 s movements So it made sense why they taught the things that they did And let s not forget that redemption is possible Jesus is the end Not sex.Amen. I initially sought this book as a secondary source for my dissertation, but I recommend it to anyone interested in the popularity, complexity, and impact of the American evangelical purity movement Unlike other books that have addressed this movement, Making Chastity Sexy considers the theological, rhetorical, and cultural consequences of the movement with equanimity My only frustration was that while Gardner address the U.S evangelical relationship to the purity movement in Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, and other African nations, she glosses over the lack of cultural diversity of the movement in the United States.
