More Than a Mistress

More Than a MistressRakes In Disgrace Twin Brothers Double The Scandal Double The Pleasure Behind Closed DoorsCharles Mountford, Marquis Of Tonbridge, Has Long Felt The Weight Of Responsibility He Knows He Must Do His Duty And Take A Wife But When He S Left Snowbound With The Unconventional Miss Honor Meredith Draycott, He Finds That His Inner Rogue Wants To Come Out To PlayMerry Doesn T Need A Man No Matter How Handsome He Is Sadly, Society Takes A Different View Charlie Is Than Happy To Make Her Socially Acceptable, But Only If She Acts Publicly As His Betrothed And Privately As His Mistress nice, easy read i was hoping for a different character to the hero alas, it is not to be the staid duke is also a rake, who used to play strip billiard with his brother and barmaids in the corner of nowhere, and is now said to be boring and conventional, by his last mistress he s headed to get engaged to someone called allison, when he comes across merry i have no idea why merry wants to redeem fallen women esp those that don t want it like jane who is likely to steal from them..still, it wasn t that far from my expectations, so i ll give it a 4 star if i finish it.here s something that i heartily sort of agree with, from Wendy s reviewThe plot line is weak and implausible in my opinion and the rapport between Charles and Merry romantically lackinginfact I found it hard to believe they actually really liked each other Charles comes across as a stiff upper lip aristocrat and this hardly changes, Merry as a fairly immoral young woman, ok she s an independent woman, answerable to no one, but the fact that she loses her virginity to a stable lad at a fairly early age and is expelled from school in this very highly moral age seems highly unlikely It is also hard to believe that the stiff and starchy heir to a Dukedom would overlook this fact Perhaps if we had been left guessing but it is mentioned on several occasions, sorry not convinced Apart from the foregoing this novel was still a fluffy, easy read, no real nail biting drama and fairly enjoyable if the reader doesn t mind plausibility stretched a bit yes, the machinations are implausible and silly, but she wasn t going at it with the stable lad he was the only person there who didn t look down on her and ridicule her so that led to the other thing that sort of makes sense not quite 4 stars but it was nice enough that i don t want to round down to 3. It was different. Probably the best read I ve had in quite a while I love Ann Lethbridge s novels and this one was no exception It is funny, outrageous, heartbreaking, sweet and with a nice and twisted story Really recommendable I enjoyed this book..a independent woman, Honer Meredith Draycott, who can afford to take care of herself is found on the side of a road by The Marquis of Tonbridge, her phaeton overturned blocking the Marquis from passing The weather is awful making it impossible for him to go further by the time he escorts her to her home feeling compelled to help her after he learned that her accident of the road was in fact no accident at all he found himself determined to find who was trying to do her harm Who is going to get saved in the end Miniseries Rakes in Disgrace Miss Draycott believes she can take care of herself He finds he can t just leave her for the villains to strike again and so the story twists and turns in delightful directions Who wants her dead How can he extend the protection of an Earl to keep her safe A great story I loved it From a review posted by an eHarlequin.com member To read , go here. Really catching..Specially the fact about a woman who doesn t really need a man to take care of her very enjoyable ,like the story line This is the second in the series Rakes in Disgrace and is the story of Charles Mountford, the Marquis of Tonbridge, the identical twin of Robert from the previous story Charles meets Miss Honor Meredith Draycott, Merry to her friends, one winter night when on his way to one of his Northern estates.Merry has had an accident on the road, her vehicle is in a ditch and Charles, like the very proper gentleman he is stops to assist her Merry is grateful and offers Charles a bed for the night, hampered by the worsening weather his stay is extended, especially after investigating and discovering that the vehicle has been tampered with Charles autocratically decides he will protect Merry against her mystery attacker, regardless of her independent spirit and lifestyle Merry is very attracted to Charles and he to her, for this reason she accepts his protection Merry is a woman in a mans world, she runs the mills left to her by her grandfather and is a very wealthy young woman It is suspected that somehow her competitors are complicit in the attack on her To add to this she is attempting to open a home for reformed prostitutes, some of whom she actually has living in her own home, which does not go down well with the townsfolk The finger of suspicion is pointed in various directions To protect her further she propositions Charles into entering into a sham betrothal with her in return for her becoming his mistress After some thought Charles agrees, mainly as with him as her husband this will add credence to her proposal to opening her home and give him the opportunity to investigate further, the danger to her life In return for this Merry must agree to keeping the betrothal a secret as Charles Father, the Duke will not approve. The plot line is weak and implausible in my opinion and the rapport between Charles and Merry romantically lackinginfact I found it hard to believe they actually really liked each other Charles comes across as a stiff upper lip aristocrat and this hardly changes, Merry as a fairly immoral young woman, ok she s an independent woman, answerable to no one, but the fact that she loses her virginity to a stable lad at a fairly early age and is expelled from school in this very highly moral age seems highly unlikely It is also hard to believe that the stiff and starchy heir to a Dukedom would overlook this fact Perhaps if we had been left guessing but it is mentioned on several occasions, sorry not convinced Apart from the foregoing this novel was still a fluffy, easy read, no real nail biting drama and fairly enjoyable if the reader doesn t mind plausibility stretched a bit 3 stars. Interesting characters, good level of light hearted humor especially the playing pool scene
