There s a moment in The Rememberer when protagonist Walt Walters is running across a prairie at night, pursued by an unknown foe, and he realizes that he s being chased by a battalion of flying, motorized garden gnomes, that sets a new standard for inventiveness, imagination, excitement, and wry humor in YA and mid grade literature, surpassing even the high bar set by J.K Rowling s Harry Potter series In that one exhilarating moment the extent of the writer s creativity is revealed, and you find yourself laughing in astonishment at the sheer genius of it all, at the horror and depth and life of the world that this novel creates. This summer has proven that masterpieces are born out of the mind of B.F Accardi this is one of, to my knowledge, three books that the author has published thus far in as many months, and might well be my favorite.I won t say much about the story the blurb tells you pretty much what you need to know without spoiling too much but it s epic in length and scope, and showcases a world that is phenomenally well realized and thought out The writing is clean and crisp, the atmosphere is thick, and the characters are human, complex, and often astoundingly funny My favorite character might be Ling, an ally of Walt Walters who is overly concerned with enforcing absurd security measures, but it s hard to pick just one favorite there are an abundance of important side characters, and all of them are colorful and lively while retaining true depth and psychological realism.I ve rarely seen a book so effectively balance seemingly conflicting tones The Rememberer could have been a comedy, an action adventure, a romance, a mystery, or even a psychological horror sort of a novel Instead, it is all of those genres, often at the same time, without ever feeling disingenuous or thinly spread I really can t think of any other novel about which I could truthfully say there s something here for everyone.Buy this book.
